Framing Causal Questions in Life Course Epidemiology

چکیده
We describe the principles of counterfactual thinking in providing more precise definitions causal effects and some implications this work for way which questions life course research are framed evidence evaluated. Terminology is explained examples common analyses discussed that focus on timing exposures, mediation their effects, observed unobserved confounders, measurement error. The illustrated by using singleton twin cohort data.

Statistical issues in life course epidemiology.
There is growing recognition that the risk of many diseases in later life, such as type 2 diabetes or breast cancer, is affected by adult as well as early-life variables, including those operating prior to conception and during the prenatal period. Most of these risk factors are correlated because of common biologic and/or social pathways, while some are intrinsically ordered over time. The stu...

متن کاملPractice of Epidemiology Dynamic Path Analysis in Life-Course Epidemiology
Life-course epidemiology seeks to better understand the mechanisms that lead to the development of chronic diseases. An example is the mechanism leading from body size to coronary heart disease (CHD); one way to acquire a better understanding of this mechanism is to investigate to what extent it works through other risk factors. In this paper, the dynamic path analysis model is presented as a t...
متن کاملCommentary: Incorporating concepts and methods from causal inference into life course epidemiology
Introduction The review by Ben-Shlomo et al. highlights how life course epidemiology is evolving and adapting to accommodate increasing access to data on novel dimensions and over extended periods. This enriched framework raises ever greater methodological challenges, leaving statisticians like us daunted by the task of translating life course enquiries into suitable analyses of the data at han...
متن کاملLife course epidemiology and infectious diseases.
There has been a traditional view that divided epidemiology into infectious and chronic diseases. Since we now know that at least 15% of cancers worldwide are caused by infections, 1 that infections frequently have a natural history lasting decades and that the same epidemiological methods can be applied to both infectious and non-infectious diseases, this view can be considered purely historic...
